  • Northwest Ordinance

    Northwest Ordinance
    Created western expansion in the north, and created 6 new states: Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Indianna, Michagan, and Minnasota. In those states slavery was prohibited so it added 6more free states.
  • Eli Whitney and the Cotton Gin

    Eli Whitney and the Cotton Gin
    Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin. This was a big deal in the south because it was a way to mass produce cotton made products. The north at this time was a very industrial place and had a lot of factories instead fof slavery. They argued with the south that they should abolish slavery and use factories instead but with this new invention they said that now they really needed slavery because they needed someone to pick cotton so they could use this new machine.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Is a time when the free states and the slave states were at equal numbers and Missouri joins the United States, but they join being a slave state. So, to even it back up Maine was created as a free state so the slave states wouldn't get to powerful. Thos event also created the 36' 30 line and really shows the differences between the north and the south
  • Compromise Tariff of 1833

    Compromise Tariff of 1833
    Jackson made nullification illegal and enfores Martial Law if the states choose not to comply with national laws. South Carolina refuses to pay tariffs and that is what started the compromise.
  • Annexation of Texas

    Annexation of Texas
    This was after Texas was denied statehood multiple times because they were going to enter the country as a slave state and then that would out number hte free ones. Texas became a Lonsestar Republic. They were finally accepted but by joint resolution. Many people thought that this was very unfair.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Fugitive Slave Act
    Has the same rules as the Fugitive Slave Clasue, no non-free slave can escape to the the north to become free and if captured they can be returned to their "owner". But this is more extreme slaves that have been free their whole lives were being kidnapped from the north and brought to the south.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas
    The people fought for Kansas to become a free state. It led to a violent fight and people that were from New England moved to Kansas just to be called a kansas citizen just so they could vote to keep it a free state.
