Election of 1860
The newly emerged Republican party won its first election in 1860 when Abraham Lincoln was elected as the first Republican president. The secession of southern states, including South Carolina, was the first big issue Lincoln had to deal with and he was not going to interfere with the issue of slavery, but the states hade no right in breaking up the Union. -
Jefferson Davis
After resigning from the U.S. senate, he was elected as the president of the Confederate states from a constitutional convention in Virginia. -
Fort Sumter, Beginning of the Civil War
Fort Sumter was cut off from supplies by southern reinforcements. Instead of giving up or defending the fort, Lincoln decided to send supplies to the fort and see what South Carolina's reply would be. They responded with the firing of guns on the fort and seized it two days later, starting off the Civil War. -
