1909, Admundsen leaves for theSouth Pole.
He was actually supposed to be going to the North Pole, but secretly went to the South Pole. -
Robert.F.Scott leaves for the South Pole.
September 1909 Scott leaves for the South Pole to beat Admundsen. -
Scott sailed from England to NZ.
He did this with 3 motor sledges, 19 siberian ponies, 33 huskies and 24 men. -
Fram docked at Madeira
September 9, 1910, Fram docked at Maderia in Spain and Amudsen sent a telegram to Scott that he was going to the South Pole instead. The were excited to be challenging Scott' team. -
3 days out from NZ they got hit by a terrible gale
This ferocious gale ended 36 hrs abd almost sunk the ship -
Scotts hut on Ross Island is blocked.
So instead new head quarters where built on Cape Evans. He then organised the depots and telephone lines between Cape Evans and Ross Island. -
January 14, 1911 Amudsen and crew reached Antarctica.
He carefully choose the Bay of Whales (Ross Ice Shelf) to set up base camp and dock his ship, as it was blocked from the wind and had a stable shoreline. It was also 100 kms closer to the pole than Scott's base camp, but it meant going over unknown territory. -

Wooden Hut
The team built the wooden hut they bought with them which they named 'Framheim' (home of the fram) after their ship. During the five months of winter, from April to September, nine men carefully set up three different depots so that they would not have to caryy extra supplies on their main expedition. -
Five Men and 52 dogs.
October 19, 1911, Amudsen's team of five men and 52 dogs set off on their race to the South Pole. They travelled the most direct route, going over anythig that got in their way and travelled 32 kms each day. -
Scott and his team head for the south pole
14 men and 2 motor sledges join him and his team. They rode on motor sledges until they could go no longer, then they hauled the rest of the way -
Reached last supplies.
November 5 Amundsen reached their last supply depot. 772 kilometers from the Pole. -
Created new depot.
November 9, they created a new supply depot for their returned journey. They had 42 doogs left to pull 4 sleds. -
10 days.
November 11, it took them 10 days to climb an unexplored 3000m mountain glaceir in very good weather, Amudsen named them after his Norwegian Queen, Maud. At the top, they took 18 dogs to go on with them and shot the rest. -

Reached the Pole
Friday December 14, 1911, the team reached the South Pole. It was a glorious moment for the men and Norway. They had 17 dogs and three sleds. First they set up camp, then over 3 days, they skied in a 16kn radius from the South Pole point to make sure of the correct position. Only then did they plant they plant the Norwegian flag. -
Scott chose some fellow explorers
They were Edward Wilson, Lawrence Oates, Edgar Evans and Henry Bowers -
They finally reach the south pole.
..Only to find that Amundsen ahd beaten them by 33 days. Then they had to survive the return journey back -
Bay of Whales
January 25th, 1912, they returned to the Bay of Whales healty and excited. -

March 7, 1912, they arrived in Hobart, Tasmania to announce victory. -
Oats comes out of the tent in the middle of a blizzard
On his way out he said: I'm just going out side and may be some time. He didn't return. -
Scotts second last entry read
Since the 21st we have had a continuousgale WSW and SW. We have had fuel to make2 cups of tea apiece and bare foodfor 2 days on the 20th. Every day we have been getting ready to start our depot 11 miles away, but outside the door of the tent it remains a whirling drift. I don't we can hope for much more better things now. We shall stick it out until the end, but we are getting weaker, of course, and the end cannot be far. I seem it is a pity, but I don't think I can write anymore. -
