The Education for All Handicapped Childrens Act
The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 ensured a free and proper education for all children with disabilities aged 5-21. -
The Handicapped Children's Protection Act
In 1986 an amendment was added which extended the age group for public education to include babies through 5 year olds. An Individualized Education Program was developed. Parents or guardians of the children were informed of all decisions and had the right to take part in decisions regarding their children. -
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
This amendment replaced the phrase "handicapped child" with "child with a disability". It added autistic children and children with traumatic brain injury to the eligibility list for special education. It also required special needs children to be educated with children without disabilities despite their own disability if possible. -
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Ammendments of 1997
The amendments added to the Idea Act in 1997 reinforced a student's right to assisstive technology (AT) devices, and required that these devices must be considered when developing a child's Individualized Education Program (IEP). This law also required the state to set goals for students with disabilities that are consistent to any
goals and standards the state has set for all
students.
