Vasco De Gama sails for india
Vasco De Gama sailed around Africa to India.. In 1498 he reached Calicut in India. There they found many things like spices, rare silks, and gems. THey then returned to Britian with cargo worth 60 times more then the cost of the trip. -

Decline of Mughal Empire
When Aurangzeb came back from war, 2 million people had died from faimine. When he died, his sons fought over the empire. The Mughal Empire was not united and western people slowy built their own power. -
Bristish overcame French and take control of India
Britian took control of India. They made the British East Company that supplied many countries with Indian spices and goods. But the Bristish put up restrictions preventing Indians from making thwir own goods. -

Sepoy Rebellion
Gossip was spread throughtout the sepoys that the cartrides of the new rifles were greased with beef and pork fat. Cows were sacred to Hindu's and Muslims never ate pork so they were outraged. 85/90 sepoys rufused cartrides and were jailed. Sepoys then rebeled -
British colonized India
Birtian took direct command of India. Britian promised to respect all treaties the East India Company made. All states that were free would remain free. Britain then won control of those states later. -

Nationalism led to the Creation on INC. They wanted INdia to have a self- government. Ram Roy's writings inspired Indian reformers. -

The Muslim Leasgue was made to protect muslim interest. THey would never accept Indian Independence it it meant rule by the Hindu- dominated congress party -
Rowlett Act
A law was passed by Britian that allowed the government to jail protesters without trial for 2 years. -
Amritsar Massacre
To protest the Rowett Acts, 10,000 HIndu's and Muslims went to AMritsar to attack the British. When the British killed most of the Indians and Muslims, people turned away from the British and into nationlists. -
Mohandas gandhi's leadership of the INC
Gandhi made a campaign law and a nonviolence law to try and achieve independence. Then he made his campaign of civil disobedience to eaken the British government. -

Gandhi put together boycotts, strikes, demonstrations, and The Salt March to try and weaken the Britian government. -
The Salt March
The goal of The Salt March was to show their hate of the salt act. they marched 240miles to the sea coast and collected sea water adn evaporated it making their own salt. The result was that Britian attacked them and 60,000 people were arrested. -

It provided local self- government and limited democratic elections, but not total independence. -
Riots between Hindus and Muslims
Britian was wondering who to give India to, the Indians or the Muslims. Indians and Muslims were rioting between each other. Muslims didn't want to be in an Indian controlled government. -

Partition was the term given to the division of India into seperate Hindu and Muslim nations. -
Indian/ Pakistan Independence
The northwest and eastern regions of Indian, where most muslims lived, became the new nation of Pakistan. This helped India and Pakistan get their independence. -
Ganhi's death
Gandi was killed when someone thought he was over protective of muslims. He was trying to make peace between India and Pakistan bu they never got along.
