8.4 Rights & Resist Timeline

  • American Revolution

    American colonists were being taxed by the British without the ability to have representation in Parliament. Ultimately, the Americans were successful in resisting by forming their own country.
  • French Revolution

    The Third Estate revolted against King Louis XVI because the monarchy did not protect the people's rights of life, liberty, and property. This revolution saw success in the short term when the government was replaced with the National Assembly, but the revolution was not as successful overall as some others.
  • Attempted Mexican Revolution

    Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was a Mexican priest during a period of Spanish rule. He used nationalism and religion in an attempt to spark a revolution against Spain's unjust taxation and oppressive rule. This attempt at revolution did not see success, but Hidalgo's ideals were proven to have lived on when Mexico did finally win independence from Spain in 1821.
  • Ethiopian Resistance

    Emperor Menelik II used the co-option of military advancements from imperial powers to build up a powerful army similar to the armies of European countries of the time. When an invading Italian army attempted to colonize Ethiopia, Menelik used a skilled army and advanced weaponry to successfully resist oppression and violation of rights.
  • Philippine War of Independence

    When the Spanish-American War ended, the United States acquired the Philippines. The year after, the Filipinos attempted to fight for their rights, but they were met with 16,000 military casualties and approximately 200,000 civilian deaths.
  • Indian Political Resistance

    Indian Political Resistance
    Mohandas K. Gandhi and Bal Gangadhar Tilak called for nonviolent resistance to oppressive British rule. Economic and political pressure was applied to the British through events like boycotts. This movement was unsuccessful in the short term, but India eventually gained independence after Ghandi and Tilak instilled their ideals in the Indian people.
