8.4 Rights and Resist

  • American Revolution

    American Revolution
    Lasting from 1775 to 1783, the colonists populating the United States were fighting against Britain’s unfair taxation on and unwillingness to listen to the colonists. The battles were fought in America, with Britain acting as the aggressor and the United States as the victim. The efforts to resist were successful as in 1783, Britain recognized America’s independence by signing the Treaty of Paris, and the United States have remained an independent nation to the present day.
  • French Revolution

    French Revolution
    Lasting from 1789 to 1799, the people in the Third Estate were fighting for their rights of life, liberty, and property in France. The aggressor was the unfair government which favored the First and Second estates and left the Third Estate, to live in poor conditions. While the revolution was successful in the sense that the monarchy was replaced with a National Assembly composed of members of the Third Estate, it was a long and bloody battle which resulted in many casualties.
  • Venezuela War of Independence

    Venezuela War of Independence
    Fought in Venezuela in 1808, the Venezuelans (victims) fought against the Spaniards (aggressors) in order to gain economic liberty and abolishes taxes and slavery. However, this victory was short lived, as in 1814, Spain regained control of the colony, and when the colony regained its freedom in 1817, the slaves unfortunately did not.
  • Mexican War of Independence

    Mexican War of Independence
    Fought in Mexico from 1810 to 1821, the natives of Mexico (victim) rebelled against the rule of Spain (aggressor, since their actions caused the rebellion) on their land in order to end the foreign oppression imposed upon them and gain the rights to life and liberty. The efforts were successful as in 1821, Mexico officially gained its Independence from Spanish rule.
  • Philippine War of Independence

    Philippine War of Independence
    From 1899 to 1901, due to negotiations with Spain, the United States (aggressors) tried to seize control of the Philippines (victim), causing the natives to revolt and fight in the Philippines to regain their freedom. Though the attempt was not successful in the short term, the cause eventually succeeded as in 1946, the Philippines gained their independence.
  • Indian Independence Movement

    Indian Independence Movement
    In India from 1907 to 1947, India rebelled against the unfair taxation imposed by their British rulers. Although all of the rebellious actions were peaceful, India was still the victim of the unjust actions imposed upon them by Britain, in turn making Britain the aggressor. The movement was successful in the long run, as in 1947, India gained its independence from Britain.
