Louisiana Purchase

1803

The Louisiana purchase started the westward expansion of the US because it allowed the citizens to be on the land. This was the first event leading to expansion.

Lewis & Clark

1805

Lewis & Clark explored the area near the Mississippi River. The were sent by Thomas Jefferson. They would create detailed maps for the rest of the Country and found themselves at the pacific ocean.

Andrew Jackson elected president

1829

This was a big influence in the US expanding westward. He made many decisions for example the Indian removal act. He did many things in presidency that influenced the expansion west. Some of the things citizens agreed with and others they disliked.

Indian Removal Act

This was a Act that allowed the president to exchange Indian lands for land out in the great plains. Many tribes moved with no hesitation but tribes like the Cherokee were forced out of the land and many died on the way. This shows that the US wanted to expand outward and they are starting with the indians.

Transportation

Around this time the US went through a mass technological expansion. Tons of railroads were created and it allowed for more expansion and development. And with that it seemed like the right time for the US to find more land and use it.

Oregon Trail

This was an effort from daring Us citizens to cross over treacherous land and reach new territory. It was seen as a success and it inspired many other citizens to expand west.

This idea is that The US was built by god and is designed to expand and share democracy and capitalism through the continent. So you can see that the citizens of the us believed that is was gods idea the expand the country.
