Seven Years' War
British government was under pressure to reduce taxes at home. That means that the American Colonists should pay a fair share of the war debt. 1756-1763 -
Proclamation Act
this aimed at reducing the costs of protecting colonists from the wars that the colonists provoked with Native Americans. -
the Sugar Act
The Sugar Act reduced the rate of tax on molasses from six pence to three pence per gallon. -
Currency Act
The colonies suffered a constant shortage of currency with which to conduct trade. There were no gold or silver mines and currency could only be obtained through trade as regulated by Great Britain. -
Quartering Act of 1765
an act to amend and render more effectual, in his Majesty's dominions in America, an act passed in this present session of parliament, intituled, An act for punishing mutiny and desertion, and for the better payment of the army and their quarters. -
Stamp Act
introduced a new tax on the colonists by imposing duties on stamps needed for important documents. -
Quartering Act
parliment passed, in 1774 it was changed to require colonists to shelter troops in their homes -
Declaratory Act
an act for the better securing the dependency of his Majesty's dominions in America upon the crown and parliament of Great Britain. -
The Townshend Revenue Act
an act for granting certain duties in the British colonies and plantations in America; for allowing a drawback of the duties of customs upon the exportation from this kingdom, of coffee and cocoa nuts of the produce of the said colonies or plantations; for discontinuing the drawbacks payable on china earthen ware exported to America; and for more effectually preventing the clandestine running of goods in the said colonies and plantations. -
Boston Massacre
a street fight that occurred on March 5, 1770, between a "patriot" mob, throwing snowballs, stones, and sticks, and a squad of British soldiers. Several colonists were killed and this led to a campaign by speech-writers to rouse the ire of the citizenry. -
