    The magna carta, was the first step towards a limited monarchy, because people were able to force, the king to sign a document saying that the king did not have absolute power and that every englishman had basic human rights.

    The Establishment of Parliament
    When parliament was established we saw that there was a fundamental shift in the way government was run and even though not powerful at the time, slowly we saw that people wanted more freedom and more representation in government and this was the start of that ideal.
  • English Civil War

    English Civil War
    The english civil war was another step away from an absolute monarchy, because the war was fought between parliamentary forces and the king's forces. The parliament's forces were able to win the war and this established England as a commonwealth and allowed parliament to take more control of government.

    In 1689 parliament, placed William II and Mary II, replacing James II. These two leaders were able to establish a working relationship between parliament and the crown. This relationship allowed more freedoms for the English people and put a positive light on parliament.

    In 1689 many events unfolded that led to the downfall of an absolute monarchy, the first of which, was a book written by John Locke. His writing the Two treatises of government, attacked absolute monarchies and showed the nation that something needed to change.

    In 1689 there was another event that pushed out the monarchy. On december 16 the English Bill of Rights was passed and this put parliament above the king and that gave citizens fundamental rights.
  • Act of Settlement

    Act of Settlement
    The act of settlement passed in 1701, by parliament ruled that succession of the English crown be available only to those of protestant birth. This was able to dispel the violence between protestants and catholics.
