    Lev Vygotsky was a Russian developmental psychologist. His work included diverse educational topics including learning disabilities. He first described the cognitive approach to teaching called 'scaffolded instruction'. In this approach the teacher provides temporary structure or support while students are learning a task; the support is then gradually removed as the students are able to perform the task independently
