On this day, Abraham Lincoln became the 16th President of the United States of America and he was the first 'Republican' to become President. He won over 3 other candidates and only got 40% of the popular vote. -
Lincoln Abolishes Slavery In Columbia.
Abraham Lincoln, signed an act abolishing slavery in the district of Columbia. It was 'An important step in the long march towards freedom, citizenry & equal rights for African-Americans'. -
Emancipation Proclamation Is Issued.
The 'Emancipation Proclamation' was issued today and was approved of by Lincoln. It 'threatened' to free all the slaves in the States and it freed all the slaves in the Confederacy. -
Lincoln Re-elected.
Lincoln was re-elected president because he was nominated by the National Union Party. Only one person, George B McClellan, ran against him and on November the 8th, Lincioln won with over 400,000 votes. He was the first president to be re-elected since 1832. -
Abraham Lincoln Is Shot.
Today, Abraham Lincoln is shot by John Wilkes Booth while watching a play at the Fords' Theater in Washington, DC. Lincoln, was actually the first American President to be assassinated. He died the next morning.
