Cabeza de Vaca goes to Texas
Cabeza and his party were the first Europeans to explore Texas. They explored the Southwestern area and the interior of Texas. -

He led an expedition into East Texas. -
Arriving Indians
Appaches arrived in Texas in the early 1600's. In the late 1600's the Tiguas and Wichitas arrive.They arrived between Cabeza de Vaca's expedition and the time when the first colony was built. -
A Colony
La Salle builds the first colony. Built fort St. Louis near present day Garcitas Creek in Victoria. Brought over 300 colonists and 100 soldiers. -
Spaniards establish a mission
Corpus Christi de la Ysleta was founded to be the first Texas mission. Its purpose was to spread Chrisianity to the Native Americans. -
Indians
Comanches and Alabama-Coushattas arrive in Texas sometime during the 1700's. The arrived 100 years after the Witchitas did. -
San Antonio de Valero
The San Antonio de Valero mission is founded across the river from Presideo San Antonio de Bexar. It was the most important spanish colony in Texas. Now known as the Alamo. -
Canary Islanders
The first group arrives in San Antonio de Bexar. They arrived after the first mission was built. -
Stephen F. Austin
Stephen F. Austin gathered colonists from New Orleans willing to come to his new settlement -
The Alamo
Santa Anna attacks The Alamo. All Texans died and Santa Anna's Army Won. -
Indian Resevations
Two reservations were founded in west central Texas. One for Comanches and one for sedentary indians. -
Sucession and the Civil War
Texas officialy seceded from the Union on March 2. It was accepted into the Confederacy the day before on March 1. -
The Battle of Palmito
The Battle of Palmito was an accidental fight after the Civil War was over that occured before word of the end reached the Texans. -
Reconstruction
It placed Texas and all other southern states that previously were in the Confederacy under military rule. -
Texas's Re-admittance
President Grant allowed Texas into Congressional Representation. -
Edmund J. Davis
He was elected as the first Republican governor. -
The Democratic National Convention
This convention lasted from the 26-29. It was held in Houston and was the first nominating convention held in a southern city since 1860. -
Dwight D. Eisenhower
He became the first U.S. president to be born in Texas. -
Texas Women
Texas women gained the right to serve on juries. Texas was not the first to give women this right. They still are allowed to serve today. -
Barbra Jordan
She was the first black women to be elected to the Texas Senate. -
Apollo 11
The Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldwin sent the message "Houston the Eagle has landed". -
Tornadoes
Tornadoes kill 53 in west Texas causing more than $400,000,000 in damage. -
