The u-boat campaing helped to bring America into the war on the side of Britain and France. By 1917 U-boats were trying to sink any ship the might be trading with Britain. This involved attacks on Amercian ships. The Amercian government responded by declaring war on Germany in April 1917. -

The German generals decided that they were about to be defeated and the German government asked the Amercian President Wilson for peace. There was an agreement to stop fighting on 11 November 1918. This agreement was called the Armistice. -
