    After the independence of Haiti, it was the first black republic in the world. It was also the second nation to gain independence in the western hemisphere.

    The congress of Vienna was created after the Napoleonic wars in Europe to reorganize the lands of different countries. The congress of Vienna was considered "comprehensive" because it covered every detail between countries after the wars.
  • End of Franco-Prussian War

    End of Franco-Prussian War
    The Franco-Prussian war was ended when the Treaty of Frankfurt am Main was signed in Paris. The end of the Franco-Prussian war helped recognize the existance and creation of the unified German state.
  • Conference of Berlin

    Conference of Berlin
    The Berlin Conference was a conference in Europe to divide the African lands among European countries. Colonies and land in Africa would provide European nations with natural resources to manufacture through their factories.
  • Boxer Rebellion

    Boxer Rebellion
    The boxer rebellion was a movement in China to rid all foreign influence. Christian missionaries in China helped provoke the Boxer's and made them more fierce and ready.
  • Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand

    Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
    Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated upon making a visit to the recently annexed Serbia. Before his arrival, Gavrilo Princip and other members of a secret military group known as the Black Hand prepared to assassinate the archduke.
  • World War 1

    World War 1
    World War 1 was a massive conflict in Europe that was caused by a series of alliances between countries in Europe. After the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Serbia, This triggered the alliances and pulled most European countries into a war. The US later joined the war a year before it ended.
  • Sinking of Lusitania

    Sinking of Lusitania
    The Lusitania was a British ocean liner that was sunk by a German U-Boat. This was approved by the Germans because of their policy of unrestricted submarine warfare. This indirectly led to the US joining World War 1.
  • Russian Revolution

    Russian Revolution
    This revolution in Russia occured during World War 1. It was caused by the lack of good leadership in Russia. After Czar Nicholas was forced to abdicate, the Russian gov't was replaced with a provisional gov't. This government failed and was later replaced with a Communist gov't.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    The treaty of Versailles was a peace document signed at the end of World War 1. This document went over the details of reparations and how Europe would rebuild and prevent future world wars.
