In 2649 Cromwell landed on Irish shores with an army and crushed the uprising. The lands and homes of the Irish were taken from them and given to English soldiers. -
Charles I is tried for treason and hanged
Cromwell and the Puritans brought Charles to trial for treason. They found him guilty and sentenced him to death. -
Oliver Cromwell abolishes Parliament
Oliver Cromwell sent the remaining members of Parliment home. -
Charles II is restored to the throne
Crowds shouted joyfully and bells rang. Because he restored the monarchy, the period of his rule is called Restoration. -
Habeas Corpus is passed
This law gave every prisoner the right to obtain a document ordering that the prisoner be brought before a judge. The judge would then decide if the prisoner should be tried or set free. -
James II comes to the throne
