3.5 Fetal Development Timeline

  • Month 1

    The germinal stage is the first stage in a baby's development.
    Size: At two weeks, the size of a pin head.
    The zygote begins to grow by cell division in the fallopian tube.
    The internal organs begin to form.
  • Month 2

    The embryonic stage is the second stage
    Size: About 1/4 inch (6mm)
    The embryo grows quickly during this stage
    The face,eyes,ears,limbs,and bones begin to form
  • Month 3

    The fetal stage is the third stage.It begins around the eighth - ninth week.
    Size: About 1 inch (25mm) long
    This stage lasts until birth.
    The developing baby is called fetus during stage.
    The vocal cords, mouth, lips, eyelids, and nose forms.
  • Month 4

    The fetal stage continues.
    Size: About 3 inches (7.6 cm) long weights 1 ounce(28 g)
    Facial features become clear
    The movements of the fetus touch the wall of the uterus
  • Month 5

    The fetal stage continues.
    SIze: 6 1/2 - 7 inches (16-18 cm) long, weighs about 4-5 ounces (113-142 g)
    Hair,eyelashes,teeth and eyebrows form
    The fetus is more active.
  • Month 6

    The fetal stage continues.
    Size: 8-10 inches (21-25 cm) long, weighs 8-12 ounces (227-340 g)
    Fat is under the skin.
    The fetus looks wrinkled.
  • Month 7

    The fetal stage continues.Size: 10 -12 inches (25-31 cm) long , weighs 1 1/2- 2 pounds (680 -907 g)
    The fetus is quiet, it has rest, and it has activity.
  • Month 8

    The fetal stage continues.Size: 14-16 inches (36- 41 cm) long , weighs 2 1/2 -3 pounds (1.0 - 1.4 kg)
    The fetus reacts to loud noises.
    The fetus is in a head down position.
  • Month 9

    This is the final fetal stage.
    Size: 17-18 inches (43-46 cm) long, weighs 5-6 pounds (2.3 -2.7 kg)
    Weigh gain continues.
    Skin becomes smooth
    The fetus movements decrease. It is ready for birth.
