3.5 Fetal Development Timeline

  • Period: to

    1st Month

    Conception- Fertilization and implantation.
    *The egg is normally fertilized within 24 hours after conception.
    *The fertilized cell starts to rapidly divide (called zygote) in day 7-10 from fertilization.
    *The Fetus gender, hair color, and eye color happens approximately 2mm long begin to develop.

    2nd Month

    Baby is considered a fetus.
    *By the 6th week, the baby's heart will be beating. Also can be heard by an ultra sound.
    *Placenta begins to form the eyes, ears, mouth, and bones.
    *Fingers and Toes will only appear webbed.
  • Period: to

    2nd month Continued

    *Brain and cranial nerves will be formed.
    *The fetus is approximately 1/2 - 3/4 inches long. Also weights about 1-2 grams by moths end.
  • Period: to

    3rd Month

    Baby is the size of a peanut.
    *The heart, Brain, liver, bladder, lungs, stomach, and kidneys are developed by the end of the month.
    *Muscles in the trunk, limbs, and head are developing.
    *About 3-4 inches long, Also weighs about 1 ounce.
  • Period: to

    4th Month

    *Hair and teeth have started to form.
    *The baby is active and moving now.
    *May start to feel the baby move.
    *The baby's digestive system and intestines are starting to form
    *Meconium first stool is in intestines
    *About 5-6 in, Also weighs about 5-8 ounces
  • Period: to

    5th Month

    *Started developing fine hair called lanugo covers the body
    *Starts getting eye lashes and eye brows.
    *Finger and foot prints are developing.
    *Starts to suck, and swallow - May even suck thumb
    *Vernix is on baby to protect the babys skin
  • Period: to

    5th Month Continued

    *The baby's ears are developed, and may be able to hear.
    *The baby is about 7-8 inches long, also 3/4 - 1 Lb
  • Period: to

    6th Month

    *Beginning to create own anti-bodies.
    *Has Developed hand grip and startled reflex.
    *Lungs are developing, as well as alveoli are forming.
    *The baby is starting to look more like it will when it is born.
    * About 9-10 in Long, about 1 1/2- 2 1/4 pound
  • Period: to

    7th Month

    *The baby's eyes are open and able to cry.
    *The baby seems to be more active
    *Bones are fully developed
    *about 11 inches long, and about 3 - 3 1/2 pounds
  • Period: to

    8th Month

    *Not a lot of new development
    *The baby is maturing and growing
    *The baby sleeps most of the time
    *The baby is cramped for space in the womb
    *Is about 13 inches long, and about 5-6 pounds
  • Period: to

    9th Month

    Preparing for Birth
    *Spent lots of time resting
    *Still plenty of active time
    *Should be head down for birth
    *All organs are fully developed
    *weight and length vary at birth. But the typical weight Is 7-8 pounds and length is typical 19-21 inches.
