    Establishment of Buenos Aires

    Buenos Aires established as a permanent settlement in 1540. The area was ideal to control trade in the area. It eventually became to large and powerful enough that indigenous tribes couldn't challenge the settlement but under many attacks from pirates.

    Discovery and Conquest of Chile

    Pedro de Valdivia of Spain formally began his conquest of Chile in 1540 and founded the city of Santiago in February 12 1541. the Spanish came looking for gold and silver but later turned attention to Chile's central valley for agriculture due to its rich and fertile farm lands.
  • Rio de la Plata

    Viceroyalty establishes Buenos Aires as capital within the provinces of the Rio de la plata
  • Spanish Flee

    The people of Buenos Aires discover new sense of pride; Spanish viceroy flees.
  • British Invasion

    British make a determined effort to capture the city of Buenos Aires. The citizens are forced to fight off the British on their own due to a lack of funds from Spain
  • Battle of Salta

    Took place on the plains of Castanares, north of the present-day city Salta. Army of the North, defeated the royalists. Ensured Argentine control of the northern territories of the former Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata.

    A new local government is established in Buenos Aires on behalf of deposed Ferdinand VII.

    Chileans declare independence from Spain, however patriots and royalist fight for control of the nation.
  • Battle of Rancagua

    Chileans suffer a devastating military loss to the royalists; prisoners and children are massacred, women are raped and buildings are burned down.
  • Jose de San Martin

    Jose de San Martin takes over Argentina's "Army of the North" as general after General Manuel Begrano is defeated at the Battle of Ayuhama.

    Spanish reestablished military control over Chile with the battle of Rancagua
  • Army of the Andes

    Jose de San Martin creates an army of 5000 men.
  • Argentina Independence

    Argentina declares independence from Spain under Jose de San Martins military leadership.
  • Chile Invasion

    Army of the Andes enters Chile unopposed.
  • Battle of Chacabuco

    Army of the Andes meets royalist forces led by General Rafael Marato outside of Santiago. The patriots are victorious and are able to enter Santiago and restore control of Chile for the first time since 1814
  • Battle of Maipu

    San Martin believed that for Argentina and Chile to truly be free, he needed to remove the Spanish from their stronghold in Peru. The Battle of Maipu is a decisive victory for the Patriots. (2000 men killed, 2200 men captured, Spanish artillery seized). Marked the liberation of Chile.
  • Chilean Navy Completion

    Despite reduced funds, Jose de San Martin was able to create the Chilean Navy in August of 1820, with the intent of aiding his attack on Lima in the future. The Navy was nothing special, consisting primarily of armed merchant ships, but they would give the Rio de La Plata forces another point of attack while also providing better defense for Chile against future foreign attacks.
  • Post Independence Revolutions for San Martin and the Rio de la Plata

    After creating his navy, Jose de San Martin sought freedom for Peru. He sailed his navy to the port of Callao and landed an assault team south of Pisco. After waiting for the proper time, his troops invaded Lima, Peru and liberated the country from the Spanish in July of 1821.
