Spanish-American War
The Spanish-American war was fought between the United States and Spain. The cause for this war was to protect the American people and businesses living in Cuba. The battle began because the U.S. warship, the Maine, exploded and sank in Havana Cuba. -
Assassination of Franz Ferdinand
The assassination of Ferdinand was the cause of World War I. His death is an important role in history because he and his wife Sophie duchess of Hohenberg, were in line to be the next people to inherit the second biggest empire in Europe. Ferdinand and his wife were both shot and killed by a 19 year old named Gavrilo Princip. this led Austria to attack Serbia. -
World War I
World War I was supposed to be the war that would end all wars to come. World War I began on July 28, 1914. It wasn’t until 2 and 1/2 year later that the United States joined the war by declaring war on Germany in April of 1917. During the war the United States sent over 4 million military members over seas and we suffered about 110,000 deaths. Under the Presidential leadership of Woodrow Wilson this war was represented as the climax of the Progressive Era. -
The progressive era
This was a period of social activism and political activism. The reason for this was industrialization, immigration, and corruption in government. Industrialization of the late 1800s had created various problems that people felt needed fixing and because it had created a middle class with the means and the desire to push government to fix those problems. -
Harlem Renaissance
The Harlem Renaissance was an intellectual and artistic explosion that took place in New York. It was known as the "New Negro Movement". The movement was considered the rebirth of African American arts.such as negro literature. The Harlem Renaissance was very significant because it marked a moment when white America started recognising the intellectual contributions of Blacks. -
Women's Right movement
This started when the 19th amendment talked about different sex's voting. Women started sticking up for themselves and wanted to start working more and more. They eventually relied less on the men to work. Women wanted to be treated equally, not so much as equal pay, but they wanted the right to do whatever a man could. -
The Great Depression
The Great Depression happened because people over-invested in the stock market and it eventually led to a crash which then led to a panic wiping out millions of investors. This caused millions to lose all they had. Banks closed and no longer had funds. People stood in soup lines to eat. The rich were now in the lines with the commoners. Because of the Great Depression, this made the US a better economic system today. Laws are put in place so something like this will not happen again. -
Dust bowl
The Dust Bowl also is known as the "Dirty Thirties" was an overproduction in farming, and there was also drought which is what caused the explosion of dirt and made the wind pick up which caused the dust from Texas to Nebraska. Many died due to the dust it is estimated to be in the thousands. We now have lessons in science, policy and adaptation to teach us to survive. -
Pearl Harbor
This was an attack on Japanese by the Military. United States had been ready to fight Japan since the early 20's. They have always had tension between the two but there were more people that over stepped Manchuria invaded Japan. A fact about Pearl harbor was that in under 2 hours 353 Japanese aircrafts surrounded the U.S naval base and sunk 18 or more ships. This was a surprise attack and killed 2,400 people and wounded over 4 thousand. -
The Cold War
The Cold War is so important today because it has helped shape our lives today. It stopped Communism from gaining power in The West and helped create many friendships. One example still used today is that most fighting is no longer front line but done from afar. -
Korean War
The Korean war was fought between North and South Korea over a border dispute. Approximately 50, 000 people died. The war prevented North Korea from taking over all of Korea. It also showed that America was willing to send troops to contain communism and that the Soviet Union was willing to send troops to expand communism. Today the South Korea is an ally to the United States. -
The death of Joseph Stalin
Joseph Stalin was actually the one who led the Soviet Union to victory in WWII. He was a leader for almost 30 years and although he may have won for the people, he was also responsible for millions of his own people dying because of purges. When the Soviet Union announced his death, many people mourned and others celebrated. -
Vietnam War
The Vietnam war was a conflict between North and South Vietnam. The US were allies to the South Vietnamese. The war was to unify the country under the government rule of communism. The US withdrew due to political pressure at home, and the North Vietnamese took over South Vietnam. -
Assassination of John F. Kennedy
John F. Kennedy was the 35th president of the United States. JFK was known for his leadership and as being the youngest president to run and win the election. His death will always be remembered because radio stations and tv stations were all televising him going through downtown Dallas and then being assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald. Voting rights act
The voting rights act is important in history because it was one of the main events in the civil rights movement. The VRA was basically only for whites to vote. No black man could even get close to voting until the bill was passed in the U.S senate on May 26 1965. -
Apollo 11 Land on the Moon
Apollo 11 is significant to American History as visiting the moon had been a major dream for Americans since the 17th century. President Kennedy was the first to propose sending a human to the moon. The reason for the launch was the rivalry and competition between the Soviet Union and the US over space exploration. -
Columbine High School Shooting
The Columbine shooting was the first high school shooting in U.S. history. In forty-nine minutes thirteen students were killed and 20 were injured. The use of rifles and handguns prompted a national debate on gun control and school safety, Investigators discovered the teens had been planning for a year to bomb the school in an attack similar to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. -
The attack on 9/11
9/11 was the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil. This occurred during the day in New York when the twin towers were hit by terrorists, and commercial airplanes were hijacked and crashed into the Pentagon in DC. The attackers were from a group called Al Queda. For the first time in its history, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) invoked Article 5, allowing its members to respond collectively in self-defense, and on 10/7 the U.S. and allied military forces launched an attack. -
Iraq War
The Iraq war was fought between Iraq and a coalition of allied forces led by the US. Iraq broke the peace treaty, and failed to follow UN rules and had weapons of mass destruction. The war resulted in the execution of Saddam Hussein.The US declared an end to the war and withdrew sucessfully. -
Death of Osama Bin Laden
Osama bin Laden was a well-known terrorist who was the leader of the Al-Qaida terrorist group. He is responsible for the bombing in 1998 and possibly 9/11. Osama was killed near his hideout compound in Pakistan. A fact about Bin Laden Is that he had been on the FBI's most wanted list for almost a decade. He was killed by American Navy Seal Team Six.
