2.01 Timeline

  • Industrial Revolution

    The Industrial Revolution began in 1760 and ended around 1820. This revolution refers to a period of economic, technological, social, and cultural change. For example, steam power was invented and new machines emerged in the textile industry in order to produce at a muhc more higher rate. In addition, the telegraph, cotton gin, sewing machine, and even the first airplane were all invented during the Industrial Revolution! This gave Americans a new way of life with more inhancements to succeed.
  • Revolutionary War

    Revolutionary War
    The Revolutionary War began in 1775 and lasted until 1783. This war was caused by the British Army trying to take control of ammunitions in Massachusetts. In 1778, US signed a pact of trade and commerce with France. France then declared war on the British. Britiain started pulling their troops away from America, which marked the end to the Revolutionary War. When Britian signed a treaty that said that they would stop to fight North America, the Revolutionary War had officially ended.
  • Women's Suffrage Movement

    Women's Suffrage Movement
    The Women's Suffrage Movement lasted from 1848 to 1920. This movement was the struggle for the right of women to vote and to have to say in government. In 1920, women finally got Congress to pass the 19th amendment, stating that women had the right to vote.
  • The Civil War

    The American Civil War began in 1861 and ended in 1865. People from the free north and the slaveholding south argued over many policies after the election of President Lincoln. Eleven southern states withdrew from the Union. After much conflict, Lincoln issued the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all slaves in captured Confederate territory. Then, in 1865, Congress passed the 13th amendment, which freed all slaves in the United States.
  • Assassination of Lincoln

    Assassination of Lincoln
    16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, was assassinated on April 14th, 1865. He was the first American president to ever be assassinated. John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln. Booth hated Lincoln because of Lincoln's decision to let African Americans vote and because of his freeing of the slaves that were in rebellion. Booth thought he was doing the south a favor by killing the President.
  • World War I

    World War I
    World War I began in 1914 and lasted until 1918. World War 1 was also known as The Great War or the War to end all wars. It involved the Allied Powers(France, Russia, Britian, Itlay, US) overcoming the Central Powers(Austria-Hungary, Germany, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire). World War One killed millions of people, and had an everlasting effect on America and the whole world. Trench warefare was very common in the first world war.
  • Prohibition

    Prohibition
    The prohibition lasted from 1920 until 1933. The 18th amendment established the prohibtion of alcoholic beverages in the United States by stating that the production, transport, or sale of alcohol allegal. The prohibition impacted the United States by sparking the rapid growth of organized crime and the corruption of public officials.
  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression began in 1929 and lasted until 1939. This severe worldwide economic depression was caused by the fall in stock prices until the stock market officially crashed on Oct. 29, 1929. Unemployment rates increased to 25% in the US. The Great Depression brought a rise in crime rate because so many people were unemployed that they had to steal food to feed their families. In addition, malnutrition and suicide rates rose. Overall, the Great Depression was a harsh time for America.
  • World War II

    World War II
    World War Two began in 1939 and lasted until 1945. This war began when Nazi Germany, under Adolf Hilter, invaded Poland. This war ended when Japan surrendered to the US after the US dropped 2 atomic bombs over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. World War Two produced about 60 million deaths and has an everlasting effect on the whole world. Unlike World War I, WWII battles involved aircrafts, ships, and other technologically advanced weapons.
  • Civil Rights Movement

    Civil Rights Movement
    The Civil Rights Movement began in 1956 and ended in1971. This movement began with the case of Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, stating that segregated public schools are unconstitutional. This decision overturned the Plessy vs. Ferguson case outcome that said that "separate but equal" were okay. The Civil Rights Movement helped make the US as racially equal as possible, with the strong help of Martin Luther King, Jr. and many others.
