    It showed the British and King George III that unjust behavior would not be tolerated in America. It is also considered the first military conflicts of the American Revolution.

    The signing of the Declaration of Independence

    It was important because it contained the nation's goals and ideals of what they want the nation to become. It also contained the complaints of the colonists against the King and why they wanted to be free from British rule.
  • Constitutional Convention

    This event occurred to decide how America wanted to be governed. This Convention was to set aside the Articles of Confederation and write a new constitution.

    Thomas Jefferson became vice president and it lead to the decline of the Federalist party. This election lead to the rise of the Democratic- Republican party.

    Louisiana Purchase

    The importance of this purchase was that it doubled the size of the United States. It also strengthened the country and influenced the Western Expansion.

    The Missouri Compromise maintained a balance between slave and free states. This compromise led to the massacre called Bleeding Kansas.

    The emancipation proclamation freed slaves in the rebelling states. It also made abolition of slavery a northern war aim.

    Battle of Gettysburg

    In this battle the Union wins in Pennsylvania. This battle is known for being the bloodiest battle of the war which had 47k casualties.
  • Gettysburg Address

    Gettysburg Address

    Lincoln dedicated the cemetery at Gettysburg and laid forth a vision of the future. He said, " A government that was "of the people, by the people, and for the people."
  • Surrender at Appomattox

    Surrender at Appomattox

    Robert E. Lee was facing troops and supply shortages and he ended up surrendering to Ulysses S. Grant at the Appomattox Court House in Virginia. The over the next few weeks the remaining Confederate armies surrendered as well.
  • The assassination of Abraham Lincoln

    The assassination took place at Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. The person who assassinated him was John Wilkes Booth who was a well-known stage actor.
