Coined by a Boston editor in 1817 , the Era of Good feeling was a phrase used to describe the nation's mood during the early 19th century. Many associated this time period with James Monroe's 2 terms presidency. This was a time of a relatively good amount of peace as the war of 1812 had just ended. -
Adams-Onís Treaty
The Adams Onís Treaty is a document signed by US Secretary of State, John Quincy Adams, and the Spanish diplomat, Luis de Onís, to settle border disputes in the south. This happened because the Seminole Indians kept raiding US settlements, and general Andrew Jackson went down to Florida to stop them. Jackson's presence scared the diplomat into signing. The US paid the Spanish about $5 milliom and gave up Texas, and got Florida in return. -
McCulloch V. Maryland
Mrs. Adams, if you read this I want you to know that I had a really good paragraph for this, but i accidentally messed up the tab, so thats why theres nothing here. Basically, this case raised 2 important question. Did the state of Maryland unconstitutionally inferfere with congressional powers, and was congreww even allowed to impose tax on the Second Bank of the United States?. -
Missouri Compromise
Ever since Missouri applied for statehood, many argued whether the new state would or would not be a slave state. To resolve this issue Henry Clay devised a statute taht prohibited slavery in the former Louisiana territory north of 36°30′ north. -
Santa Fe Trail
The Santa Fe Trail was a 19th century highway stretching from Independence, Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The trail was opened by a trader named William Becknall, and merchants often used it to ship and sell their goods. -
Monroe Doctrine
The Monroe Doctrine was a document that stated that foreign powers may not interfere with American business. Also, it said that foreign powers may not explore and settle in unexplored American lands. -

This corrupt political system continued till after the Civil War, but was regulated in the late 19th century. It was a system in whcih the supporting party of a presidential race got government jobs. -
Indian Removal Acts
The Indian Removal Act was passed by Congress on May 28, 1830. At the time, Andrew Jackson was serving his term as president. It gave him the power to negotiate with the Indians. He gave Indians to the territory west of the Mississippi, and in return, he got Inian Ancestral land. -
Nullification Crisis
This was also during Jackson's presidency. The state of South Carolina declared that the Tariffs of 1828 and 1832 were unconstional and attempted to null and void. -
Alamo
At the time, Texians and Mexicans had been fighting for land , and the Texians had Alamo. The arrival of Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna caught the Texians by surprise. This surprise attack followed a 13 day seige of Alamo, in which the Mexicans won by killing all teh opposing forces. -
Trail of Tears
Andrew Jackson forced the Indians to move to the Oklahoma territory. The journey there killed about a quarter of the travellers. -
Donner Party
A group of almost 90 emigrants headed west in a supposedly shorter route to California from Springfiel, Illinois. The group was led by 2 brothers, Jacob and George Donner. They soon encountered rough terrain in the Sierra, Nevada mountains and were trapped by heavy snowfall. They were reduced to cannibalism to survive through the winter. -

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalga
Signed between the US and the Mexican Republic, this document was officially titled the Treaty of Peace, Friendship, Limits and Settlement. So that title is pretty self-explanitory. -
Gadsden Purchase
It was a treaty between Mexico and the US, in which the US paid nearly $10 million 29,670 square mile portion of Mexico, which later became Arizona and New Mexico. -
Indian Territory
The Indians aqcuired a designated territory in Oklahoma in which Americans or any foreign power were not allowed to interfere with.
