1970's Computer Inventions

  • System 370 Model 145 Mainframe Computer

IBM creates the Model 145 Mainframe Computer, which used semi-conductor memory instead of core memory, allowing for the same amount of storage in half the space.
  • Xerox 9700 Laser Printer

Xerox creates the first laser printer, which used lasers to print images instead of light-sensitive drums used in other copy machines.
  • IBM SCAMP is developed

Dr. Paul Friedl creates the Special Computer APL Machine Portable (SCAMP) personal computer prototype, IBM's first personal computer.
  • Community Memory

Lee Felsenstein, Efrem Lipkin, Ken Colstad , Jude Milhon, and Mark Szpakowski teamed up to create this new technology. This terminal, connected to a timeshared mainframe computer, allowed anyone to walk up and post announcements and messages.
  • Speak & Spell

Texas Instruments Inc. creates this technology, which was the first electronic duplication of the human vocal tract on a single integrated circuit. This paved the way for AI, such as Apple's Siri, to talk to users through electronic devices.
