The National Guard was called for duty by Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus to bar nine black students from attending previously all White Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. He gave up his troops on September 21 and the students were allowed entrance to class two days later. Violence caused President Eisenhower to dispatch federal troops to Little Rock on September 24 to enforce the edict. -

Russia's first satellite launch, known as Spuntnik, took place in 0ctober 4 1957. The U.S reacted by freaking out, and starting building rockets and satellites. From then on The Soviet space launch created the Space Race. The Sputnik however daceyed on the 4th of january 1958. For your information we won the space race and we put a man on the moon. -

Urban riots plague U.S. cities. In Newark, New Jersey, twenty-six are killed, fifteen hundred injured and one thousand arrested from July 12 to 17. One week later, forty are killed, two thousand injured, and five thousand left homeless after rioting in Detroit, known as the 12th Street Riots. The riots eventually stopped by over 12,500 Federal troopers and National Guardsmen. -
