    ESDAC
    The Electronic delay storage automatic calculator was a practical stored program computer to provide a regular computer service. It was constructed by Maurice Wilkes at Cambridge University. It transformed research methods by making it possible to speedily tackle different analyses.
  • Ferranti Mark 1

    Ferranti Mark 1
    The Ferranti Mark 1 was installed at Manchester University. It was the worlds first commercial computer. Tom Kilburn and Freddie Williams designed the computer. The computer was used to help forecast election results, produce actuarial tables, and calculate wages.
  • IBM 701

    IBM 701
    President of the International Business Machines Corporation (IBM), Thomas Watson Jr., made it clear that he wanted to make the most advanced high speed computer at the time. In just less than two years IBM developed and produced the IBM 701. It was IBM's first commercially available scientific computer.

    The first bank computers were invented. The computers used MICR (magnetic ink character recognition) to read checks. The first automated banking machine in the U.S. was devised by Donald Wetzel. The computers helped banks save time and money.
