First televised presidential debate airs
Nixon and Kennedy have a debate and it is televised. There was around 70 million people watching. This is when people started to like Kennedy for his looks.

JFK wins presidential election
President Kennedy wins the election. This was the closest election since 1884. A lot of people say he was so liked for his good looks.

The pill is born
This was the first drug designed for social purposes, not medical purposes. When it first came out it was only available for married women. This quickly changed.

Marilyn Monroe dies
Marilyn was 36 years old when she died. She was found dead, in her bedroom. There was many rumors about her and President Kennedy.

Cuban missile crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis lasted 13 days. Disaster was avoided when the U.S. made agreements with the soviet union. President Kennedy also secretly agreed to remove U.S. missiles from Turkey.

JFK is assassinated
President John F. Kennedy was in a parade in Dallas Texas when he was shot and killed. President Kennedy was there campaigning. Around 12:30 bullets hit him in the head and neck. The governor was also hit.

Smoking "Hazardous To Your Health"
Surgeon General's 1964 report on smoking comes out. People see smoking as dangerous and bad for your health. In 1965 Congress passed the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act, this required there to be a warning label on all cigarettes.

Bobby Kennedy is killed
Senator Robert Kennedy was in Los Angeles at the Ambassador Hotel. Right after his speech he was shot many times. Bobby died the next day.

Richard Nixon wins election
Nixon was the 37th president. He was born on January 9, 1913 in Yorba Linda, California. He was a Republican Congressman and served as vice president with Dwight D. Eisenhower. He ran for president in 1960 but lost to JFK.

Over half a billion people watched while Apollo 11 lands. People were speechless. At 10:56 pm Neil Armstrong set his foot on the Moon.
