  • G.I. Bill of Rights

    This law was passed to provide help for veterans returning from World War II. It allowed one year one of unemployment compensation when returning, paid for veterans to go to high school or college, and also the option of a low-interest loan to start a farm or business.
  • World War II Ends in Europe

    Germany and the rest of the Axis Powers surrendered a week after Adolf Hitler committed suicide. The day known as V-E day, or Victory in Europe, is the day the Allied Powers won.
  • World War II Ends in Japan

    The war ended in Japan after they surrendered because the US dropped the two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The surrender happened four months after the Axis powers and the war in Europe ended. This official ceremony took place on the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
  • Committee on Civil Rights

    President Harry S. Truman created the committee with Executive Order 9808. It was to investigate the status of civil rights in the country and propose measures to strengthen and protect them. After the committee submitted a report of its findings to President Truman, it disbanded in December 1947.
  • 22nd Amendment

    The 3 term Presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt sparked a debate over how many times a president could serve. This amendment propose that a president that served a term 2 or more years could only serve 2 terms.
  • CIA Creation

    The CIA, or the Central Intelligence Agency, was created by President Harry S. Truman. The company was given to authorization to secretly fund intelligence operations and conduct personnel actions outside of standard US Government procedures.
  • Marshall Plan

    This plan, also known as the European Recovery Program. It was a U.S. program providing aid to Western Europe following the devastation of World War II. It was enacted in 1948 and provided more than $15 billion to help finance rebuilding efforts on the continent.

    Korean War

    The war started when the North Korea invaded South Korea to try and unite the Korean peninsula under communist rule. America quickly entered to support South Korea. Quickly, though, the war came to an armistice because of fear of starting a World War III.
  • NSA Creation

    The NSA, also known as the National Security Agency, was created by Harry S. Truman. The NSA helps identify threats, such as cyber threats now, and break codes. They also help come up with secret codes to communicate to the military so that the enemy does not find out the plans and strategies.
  • Presidency of Dwight D. Eisenhower Begins

    Dwight D. Eisenhower was elected the 34th President of the United States of America. He grew up in Abilene, Kansas from a Pennsylvania dutch family. He served in World War II as a general. His goals for his presidency were to stop the spread of communism and reduce federal deficits.
