The first major push was the sinking of the Lusitania; a British cargo ship carrying American citizens. Secondly, the Zimmermann Telegram pushed the U.S. over the edge. The Zimmerman telegram was a German message to Mexico, asking them to make an alliance with Germany in exchange for U.S. Territory should the U.S. enter the war.
