Battle of Little Big Horn
Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong led his men into the Black Hills where they fought the Sioux and Cheyenne indians led by Sitting Bull. Commonly referred to Custer's Last Stand. Custer and his men lost. -
Haymarket Riot
A gathering of laborers in Haymarket Square in Chicago took place to rally for better working conditions. Eventually violence insured from the police and the civilians which lead to someone throwing a bomb that killed police and civilians. -
Dawes Act
President Grover Cleveland signed the Dawes Act, which divided up the land given to the Native Americans in the form of individual or heads of families. This changed from the idea of giving the land to the Native American's as sovereign nations. This also freed up some of the land for the white man. -
Sherman Anti-Trust Act
Law passed by Congress, while Benjamin Harrison was president, and authored by senator John Sherman. This law was put into place to regulate competition between enterprises. This was in the response of monopolies and to allow equal opportunities for businesses. -
The sinking of Battleship Maine
The sinking of American battleship in Havana Harbor. This led to the American phrase, "Remember the Maine! to hell with Spain!" This escalated tensions between Spain and the United States. -
Spanish American War
A war conflict between Spain and the United States after the sinking of the battleship Maine. This involved the American intervening in the Cuban war of independence. -
U.S. annexes Hawaii
Due to it's location and sugar industry Hawaii was annexed. Hawaii was used a strategic naval base for the Spanish American war. -
End of Spanish American War
United States and Spain sign armistice, The Treaty of Paris, successfully ending the Spanish American war.
