    Was caused by a dispute over Texas. Helped America obtain land in the north.
  • Gold Rush

    The gold rush was a big factor in westward expansion and manifest destiny. It caused many people to move to the west in hopes of getting rich.
  • Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo

    Ended the war between America and Mexico. America gained additional territory, Mexico gave up Texas, Mexico recognized the Rio Grande River as the border.
  • Fugitive Slave Act

    Required that slaves were to be turned back to their owners even if residing in a free state.
  • Comprimise of 1850

    The great compromise was passed in order to try to avoid tension between North and South over slaves. It called for citizens to assist in recovering fugitive slaves.
  • Homestead Act

    Any US citizen that had never held arms against the US could claim 160 acres of land. Takers had to live and improve this land.
