Bay of Pigs Invasion
The CIA worked to get rid of Fidel Castro. They gathered 1,500 Cuban trained troops to fight against Fidel Castro. These troops were outnumbered and surrendered within 24 hours. This made the American officials nervous because they were within 100 miles from them. -
Construction of the Berlin Wall
The wall was built by the German Democratic Republic. It separated Berlin into East Berlin and West Berlin. They built the wall to keep the people of East Berlin from going into West Berlin. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban Missile Crisis lasted 13 days. It was a military and political standoff between the Soviet Union and the United States over a Soviet Union missile being installed in Cuba. -
Pol Pot
Pol Pot was a political leader whose communist Khmer Rouge government ran Cambodia. During his rule, 1.5 to 2 million Cambodians died of starvation. -
Collapse of the Soviet Union
A large majority of the USSR declared independence. Only one of 15 republics remained. -
Cold War Ended
The Cold War ended following the collapse of the Soviet Union, the Berlin wall opened, republics were made, and the iron curtain lifted.
