    The Louisiana Purchase took place in 1803. 828,000,000 square miles of territory was purchased by teh Americans. The land is divided into 15 states today. This is one of the most important things Thomas Jefferson did during his presidency. 9 years after the Louisiana Purchase was made the state of Louisiana was made.     Mexican/American War
    The Mexican/American War took place from 1846-1848. The U.S. Army fought most of this battle in Mexican territory. The U.S. Army took most of the Pacific continent from the Mexicans. The Mexican Army was unprepared for the U.S. Army attacks. Mexico lost one third of their land in this battle. The Americans took land that is presently known as California, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.

    James Marshall was the first to find the gold that was located at Sutter's Mill in Northern California. The dicovery of gold by Marshall made it one of the most dramatic events in the 19th century. When people heard that there was gold in California, they started to sneak into the hills where the gold was located.
