    YouTube creators, Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, noticed that while video creating technology continued to increase, there was lacking a convenient way to openly share these video. Hurley and Chen gathered a small team of employees, who quickly launched a test site. In a matter of months, Sequoia Capital started funding YouTube, eventually turning it into a corporation.

  • First Video Posted

    The first video uploaded ever uploaded onto YouTube was posted by Jawed Karim, a YouTube co-founder. This 18-second video, consisting of Karim standing in front of elephants at the San Diego Zoo, is appropriately titled - "Me at the zoo". This video currently has over 41 Million views.

    YouTube was purchased for $1.65 Billion, making it one of Google's most expensive purchases. Google had no doubt that YouTube would grow as more people made the switch from television to the internet. "This is the next step in the evolution of the Internet", said Eric Schmidt, the Google Chief Executive Officer.

  • Launched Partner Program

    This program allows everyday people to make a living from posting videos. How this works is "selected YouTubers can earn shared revenue through ads placed on the same pages as their own videos" (Moreau 1). A few people apart of this program include Michael Buckley, Philip Defranco, and Ryan Higa.

  • First Ads

    "The launch of the new advertising format represents a critical step for Google-owned YouTube, which needs to make money from its key video content while not driving away users with too many annoying ads" (MediaGuardian 1). The original ad format introduced was a transparent banner that sat along the bottom of the video. This was found to serve its purpose without being a distraction from the videos.

    A lot of people took to YouTube as a way to listen to their favorite music. Introducing Vevo to YouTube was a way to have popular music readily available for their viewers. "Vevo has music videos, original series, behind-the-scenes footage, live performances and interviews with artists" (Moreau 1).
