    The English colony of Jamestown is founded in 1607. Many of those involved, however, were unprepared to work hard in the colony and many starved to death. The location also hampered the growth of food and propagated disease. Nevertheless, it was the first permanent English colony in the New World.

    Quebec is founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlainas as a French colony in the New World. Not many French, however, make the journey across the Atlantic Ocean to the new colony.

    Santa Fe is established in 1610 as the first permanent European settlement in the American Southwest. The Spanish settlers do not flourish over the century, but they remain nevertheless. The Indian population, however, suffers tremendous losses due to European exploitation and drops from around 60,000 to approximately 17,000.

    England undergoes a series of civil wars that ends in the execution of King Charles I, the exile of his son Charles II, and the establishment of the Commonwealth of England under the leadership of Oliver Cromwell.

    Charles II comes to the throne after having been exiled. The Commonwealth of England set up by Oliver Cromwell falls apart when his son takes over paving the way for Charles II to return to power.

    An Indian named Metacom (King Philip to the English) starts an Indian Revolt against the English after the execution of three Indian Warriors accused of murder. The war results in a decisive end to Indian power in New England.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Bacon's Rebellion
    Nathaniel Bacon and others become convinced there is an Indian conspiracy to kill all of the English. When the English governor refuses to listen to them, Bacon and his followers begin to arm themselves against the Indians, rebelling against the governor. When Bacon dies of typhus a short time later, the rebellion falls apart and Berkley, the governor, executes the remaining rebel leaders.

    Charles II dies. James II, a Roman Catholic, ascends to the throne of England.
  • The Glorious Revolution

    The Glorious Revolution
    William of Orange takes the throne from James II in a bloodless revolution. He rules with Queen Mary II in a balance of power between the monarchy and parliament.
