    What we learnt today:
    • The term 'Iron Curtain' was not actually coined by Winston Churchill, but it was popularised after his speech in Fulton Missouri.
    • World divided into two distinct camps; the West and the East
    • Truman Doctrine was aimed at containment of communism. Truman set up the C.I.A towards this aim.
    • Fear about expansion of communism a result of increase in popularity of communist parties in W. Europe.

Lesson 3 - Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan
    What we learnt today:
    • Truman was perceived by Stalin to be antagonising the Eastern Bloc by offering the Marshall Plan of recovery.
    • By offering the Marshall Plan, Truman hoped to continue Western Europe's dependence upon the USA, while also instigating an economic recovery so it didn't fall to communism.
We also watched People's Century - Marshall Plan

    Lesson 4 - Berlin Blockade

    - Increased tensions between East and West
    - Marshall Plan and economic recovery of the West
    - The airlift to alleviate West Berlin began relatively slowly but eventually came to supply the people there more fully than by rail.
    - USSR didn't respond due to fear of nuclear war, among other reasons.
    - Gail Halvorsen ('The Candy Bomber') increased popularity of the USA
  • Lesson 5 - Formation of NATO

Lesson 5 - Formation of NATO
What did we learn about today?
    • NATO = North Atlantic Treaty Organisation
    • NATO formed between the allies of the USA (Soviet retaliation was the creation of the Warsaw Pact in 1955)
    • Each nation had to pledge to defend any other in case of an attack by a non-member (didn't necessarily have to military defence - could be money etc...)
    • All members had to meet certain military specifications, which were invariably those of the USA. An example of US economic imperialism?
