Lesson 2 - The Iron Curtain
What we learnt today:- The term 'Iron Curtain' was not actually coined by Winston Churchill, but it was popularised after his speech in Fulton Missouri.
- World divided into two distinct camps; the West and the East
- Truman Doctrine was aimed at containment of communism. Truman set up the C.I.A towards this aim.
- Fear about expansion of communism a result of increase in popularity of communist parties in W. Europe.

Lesson 3 - Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan
What we learnt today:- Truman was perceived by Stalin to be antagonising the Eastern Bloc by offering the Marshall Plan of recovery.
- By offering the Marshall Plan, Truman hoped to continue Western Europe's dependence upon the USA, while also instigating an economic recovery so it didn't fall to communism.

Lesson 4 - Berlin Blockade
What did we learn in this lesson?
-The background to why the Berlin Blockade began.
- (Permanent) Split of Germany
- Increased tensions between East and West
- Marshall Plan and economic recovery of the West
- The airlift to alleviate West Berlin began relatively slowly but eventually came to supply the people there more fully than by rail.
- USSR didn't respond due to fear of nuclear war, among other reasons.
- Gail Halvorsen ('The Candy Bomber') increased popularity of the USA -
Lesson 5 - Formation of NATO
What did we learn about today?- NATO = North Atlantic Treaty Organisation
- NATO formed between the allies of the USA (Soviet retaliation was the creation of the Warsaw Pact in 1955)
- Each nation had to pledge to defend any other in case of an attack by a non-member (didn't necessarily have to military defence - could be money etc...)
- All members had to meet certain military specifications, which were invariably those of the USA. An example of US economic imperialism?
