Much of the city was burned, 150,000 male "war prisoners" were butchered, 50,000 male civilians were massacred and at least 20,000 women and girls were raped, mutilated and killed.

The attcl destrpyed nearly 20 naval vessels including 8 enourmous battleships, almost 200 airplanes and more than 2000 american soliders and 1000 injured. Only one day after the attack President Franklin D. Roosvelt asked congress to declare war on Japan.

Thousand died during the harsh Death March. General Douglas MacArthur promised to take revenge in the Phillippines. MacArthir made good on his word and recaptured the Batan Peninsula.

It is also believed that Germans lpst several hundreed men in the uprising.

The condidiotns of the battle where very difficult the marines wiped out the defending forces after a month of fighting. one of the most enduring images of Americans raising the flag over Mount Suribachi came from this battle.

The months following roughly 100000 more people died slowly of radiation posing. The dropping of the bombs forced Japan to surrender and stopped the war.
