  • Hitler joins German Workers Party

    On the orders of his army superiors, Hitler applied to join the party. Although Hitler initially wanted to form his own party, he claimed to have been convinced to join the DAP because it was small and he could eventually become its leader.

    The National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP) rose to become the second-largest party with 18.25% of the vote and gained 107 seats, a massive increase from the 12 seats that had been gained in the last election.
  • Hitler becomes Chancellor

    He introduces censorship,passes a law ending civil liberties, and passes the Enable act, making himself dictator for 4 years
  • Hitler merges the posts of chancellor and president

    Hitler had Röhm executed without trial, which encouraged the army and other reactionary forces within the country to urge Hitler to further consolidate his power by merging the presidency and the chancellorship. Hindenburg died of lung cancer on August 2, 1934. A plebiscite vote was held on August 19.
