  • Japanese Invasion Of Manchuria

    Started Japanese aggression against China and Indochina. Japan intended to create a Japanese sphere of economic domination. The impact of this on US history was the United States placing an embargo on Japan leading to Japan viewing us as a threat.
  • Munich Pact

    The Munich Pact allowed Hitler to take more land. In exchange for Hitler's agreement to seek no more territory after claiming the land.
    This was significant to US history because Hitler broke the pact and continued to take more land meaning we had to storm the beaches of Normandy.

    Kristallnacht

    Kristallnacht stands for the night of broken glass it was an event in which nazis torched Jewish synagogues. They also vandalized Jewish homes.
    This was significant because it was the start of the holocaust.
  • German Invasion Of Poland

    On September 1st Germany invades Poland. This led France and Britain to declare war on Germany. This was significant to US history because, in the US, FDR sought to have the Neutrality Acts amended in response to German aggression, in an effort to provide aid to the Allies.
  • Neutrality Acts of 1939

    The Neutrality Acts allowed nations at war to buy goods from the US. We gave the British aging warships.
    This was significant because we were inadvertently partaking in the war.
  • Exec Order 8802

    African Americans served in segregated units in the military. They also faced a lot of discrimination in training. A. Philip Randolph threatened to organize a march on Washington demanding equal access to war-time jobs. In response, FDR issued exec order 8802.
    This was significant it abolished racial discrimination in the military.
  • Atlantic Charter/Atlantic Conference

    In order to supply the allies and prepare for the possibility of war. FDR and Winston Churchill signed the Atlantic Charter. This played a significant role in US history because it showed FDR's commitment to opposing Germans and Japanese aggression.
  • Lend-Lease Act

    The Lend-Lease Act allowed the United States to sell any government and defense article. It was necessary for the United States Defense.
    It was significant because it allowed us to trade with europeans.
  • Attack on Pear Harbor

    On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 Japan launched a surprise attack against the Pearl Harbor naval base. Japan's attack was in response to the embargoes that the United States placed on them after they invaded Manchuria. It left 2400 Americans Killed and 1300 wounded and 19 ships sunk. This was significant because it forced the United States into the war.

    Exec Order 9066 was in response to the pearl harbor attack and was put in place because of the fear that it instilled in the American public. Exec Order 9066 authorized the internment of Japanese Americans.
    This was significant because it showed that fear and prejudice can change how an entire country operates.

    The battle in the pacific was intended to stop the Japanese offensive. The United States used a strategy called island hopping.
    The victory at Midway stopped the Japanese offensive and was significant to our victory in the war.

    Operation Torch was the invasion of North Africa. The invasion was started with the intention of freeing the mediterranean sea from German control.
    This was significant because it took the pressure off the ussr.
  • D-Day

    D-Day was when many Americans sacrificed themselves by storming the beaches of Normandy. There were over ten thousand casualties and we won and gained an allied victory,
    The significance of this day was the fact that it was a huge turning point in the war as German troops were now fighting on three fronts.

    The Battle of the Bulge was the last German offensive. It was the beginning of the end for the Nazis and for Hitler's reign of terror. The allied powers marched toward Berlin.
    The significance of this event is that it turned the tide of the war entirely.
  • Korematsu v. US

    Fred Korematsu was a Japanese American who refused to leave his home in protest to exec order 9066. He took his case to the Supreme Court and lost. He argued that the internment camps were unconstitutional. The significance of this event was that fear and prejudice corrupted the American legal system and unfairly put Japanese Americans in internment camps.
  • Yalta Conference

    Yalta Conference including Churchill, FDR, Stalin they thought of Final plans for the defeat of Europe & began a discussion of post-war European Plans.
  • Bombing Of Hiroshima And Nagasaki

    The bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were considered to be big turning points in the war. There were a lot of innocent people who were killed but it was for the greater good.
    The significance of this event was that it ultimately brought an end to the war.
  • United Nations Establishment

    The US played a key role in helping to organize and start the United Nations. United Nations: intergovernmental organization tasked to promote international cooperation and to create and maintain international order.
    This was significant because the United Nations keeps everything in balance.

    As the war ended, the death camps of the Final Solution horrified both the soldiers who liberated the camps and the public. The Nuremberg Trials were Germans being prosecuted for war crimes.
    This was significant because it was the end of the Nazi regime.

    The Truman Doctrine pledged to contain communism in Europe. and was first applied when the United States supplied military and financial aid to Greece and Turkey to resist the communist-backed rebel forces there.
    The significance of this was tension building with Russia.
  • Marshall Plan

    With the fear that a war-torn and economically weak western Europe would elect communist leaders, the United States offered financial aid. It was called the Marshall Plan and it promoted economic rebuilding.
    This significant event prevented most European nations from falling to communism.
  • Israel Established

    Israel was established on May 14th, 1948. The United States supported the self-determination of the Jewish people.
    This was significant because it demonstrated the impact of German war crimes.

    The first test of US policy by the Soviet Union came when the Soviets blockaded Berlin. The US would win this first confrontation with the Berlin Airlift. The United States would supply the people of Berlin with food.

    In a series of events that led to cold war fear. The United States established NATO. NATO was a military alliance aimed at the Soviet Union.
    This was significant because tensions would continue to rise.
  • Soviet Union Testing Atomic Bombs

    After making an alliance that opposes NATO the Soviets would go on to test atomic bombs. It quickly raised tensions between the United States and the Soviets.
    This significant moment pushed the United States to start researching a hydrogen bomb causing a nuclear arms race.

    Korean War

    In the 1950s Communist, North Korea invaded South Korea. Truman believed the invasion to be orchestrated by the Soviet Union and urged the United Nations to take action. They unanimously voted for a ceasefire.
    This was significant because the majority of troops to support came from the United States.
  • Soviet Union Launches Sputnik

    The space race took off when the Soviet Union launched Sputnik. This ultimately led to even more tension between the Americans and Soviets.
    This was significant because it forced the United States to pass a new act.
  • National Defense Education Act

    The US Congress passed the National Defense Education Act. This act promoted science and math skills. It also promoted the knowledge to counteract the fear of consumerism.
    This was significant because it made Americans less competitive.

    Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan

    The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on Dec 24 1979 to prop up a friendly government. The US supported the Afghan resistance movement.
    This is significant because the Soviets lost again.
  • Fall Of The Berlin Wall

    The Fall of the Berlin Wall was considered to be the end of the Cold War. But there were many more things surrounding the end of the Cold War such as changes in the Soviet Union and the strain the arms race caused.
    This was significant because this ended a bunch of tension and fear of another huge war breaking out.
  • Rise Of The Berlin Wall

    Germany was divided after World War II into East being mostly soviet and West being mostly allied. They eventually decided to erect a wall to separate East Berlin and West Berlin.
    This wall was significant as it became a symbol of the Cold War.
