The Battle of Britain was a fight between the German Luftwaffe and the British Royal Air Force that raged over Britain from July to October 1940. This was the first battle to be fought entirely in the air. The Luftwaffe could noot handle the long range battle of the British and at the end of the twelve- week battle Hitler postponed indefinitely the invasion of Britain. -
Potsdam Conference
The Potsdam Conference was held at Cecilienhof in Potsdam, Germany from July 17- August 2, 1945. It included the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States.The parties were represented by Joseph Stalin, Winston Churchill (later Clement Attlee), and President Harry S. Truman.They gathered to decide how to administer punishment to Nazi Germany, which had agreed to unconditional surrender 9 weeks earlier. -
Atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki
After the German surrender, the Japanese wouldn't agree to demands for unconditional surrender.The plan was to continue the firefight in Japan then invade with the United states being aided by China and the United Kingdom, but this would have resulted in up to 1 million U.S. casualties. President Truman made the call to drop the bombs in hopes of ending the war and putting the U. S. in a dominent position to determine the course of the postwar world. The bombs were dropped on August 6 and 9.
