  • 1914 Assassination

    1914 Assassination
    Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were shot by Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo. This happened during an official visit of Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

  • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.

    Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.
    The assassination of Franz Ferdinand was the perfect excuse to go to war with Serbia. This was the first of many declarations of war.

  • Alliances start declaring wars on each other

    Alliances start declaring wars on each other
    This is where many of the main wars start being declared. Germany declares war on Russia, France and Belgium. Britain declares war on Germany. Austria-Hungary declares war on Russia. France and Britain declare war on Austria-Hungary. The United States says they are neutral.

    This was the start of the WWI. Germany violated Belgiums neutrality which caused a chain effect of things.

  • First battle of the Marne

    This was the first war that used transportation and radio interceptions. The French used taxis and buses to rush at the Germans and made them lose communication which led to retreat.

    Italy joined the allies of Britain, France, etc and the first thing they did was declare war on Austria-Hungary because of the treaty of London

  • Battle of Jutland

    This was the Largest naval battle in all of WWI. It was between the Germans and the British. This led to both sides drawing even though they both claiming victory

  • Battle of Somme

    Battle of Somme
    This was known as one of the bloodiest wars in World War I. This took place near the river of Somme in France and was the cause of over 1.5 million deaths.

  • The United States declares war on Germany

    The United States primary motivation to join the war was because of all the things Germany was doing in the waters like sinking ships.

  • Russia signs armistice with Germany

    Russia signs armistice with Germany
    They both signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, which took Russia out of World War 1

  • Start of Spanish Influenza

    Start of Spanish Influenza
    The first case of the Influenza was reported in Fort Riley, Kansas. This spreads overseas and kills 20 million worldwide.

  • Treaty of Versailles

    This was a treaty that Germany was forced to sign. This ended most of the war but the US senate didn’t ratify it, which means that they were prevented form joining the League of Nations.
