Killing of Franz Ferdinand
A 19 year old, Gavrillo Princip shot and killed the archduke of Austria-Hungary. He was a part of a slavic nationalists group called the Black Hand. They wanted the archduke killed because they wanted Bosnia freed from the control of Austris-Hungary. -
Austria declares war on Serbia
On July 28, 1914 Austria declared war on serbia. They did this to punish serbian nationalists group, Black Hand for killing their archduke Ferdinand. This was the first declaration of war in WW1. -

first battle of Ypres
On october 19, the first of three battle was fought to control the city of Northern Belgium. This battle was fought between the allied forces and Germany. Fighting continued until November 22 when the battle came to a hault after a harsh winter. -

This war was between Germany and France. Germany had been drastically advancing until France stopped them in their tracks. The French eventually won the battle. there was a total of 600,000 casualties on both sides. -

USA had stayed out of the war for a long time before entering the war. The reaon we stayed out of the war for so long was because the US had a lot of German immigrants who wanted to join the war on Germanys side. However, the US joined the war on the allies side.
