    3/8 The battle of Atlantic was the longest battle of the war and consisted mainly of the navy who fought in the Atlantic Ocean. Canada's role was to protect supply convoys from Northern America to Russia. Canada sent out convoys to Britain, but Hitler was aware of this, and started to destroy the supplies. Once he destroyed the convoys it was then up to Canada to supply its navy for the Battle of the Atlantic making their efforts crucial in this battle much closer to home.

    The battle of Dunkirk was an important battle between Germany and the allies. As part of the Battle of France on the Western Front, the Battle of Dunkirk was the defence and evacuation of British and allied forces in Europe from 26 May to 4 June 1940. Canada helped to hold off the Nazis until the British boats arrived and also provided their efforts/aid in the evacuation that allowed Britain to continue fighting in what Churchill thought was the greatest military disaster.

    4/8 The battle of Britain was the mass bombing of Britain by the enemy in something known as the "blitz creed" to try and hault Britains weapons production. It was the perfect stage for Canada to showcase their loyalty and strength to Britain, when their most trusted allie came under attack. Canada was there for Britain by producing hurricane fighters and training pilots to defend Britain. Even though it was the battle of Britain Canada played a vital role in the success in this battle.

    The Battle of Hong Kong was a Japanese attack on China. Canada defended Hong Kong out of fear that Japan would attack Canada after their victories in the Pacific.This lead to many deaths and injuries of Canadian soldiers in this tough battle. Many soldiers where also taken as prisoners of war and captured by the Japanese making this a crucial event in the Canadians WW2 story.
  • Battle of Dieppe

    The Dieppe raid was an allied attack on the German-occupied port of Dieppe. Over 6,000 infantrymen, predominantly Canadian objectives included seizing and holding a major German port and upon retreat, the Allies also wanted to destroy coastal defences and all strategic buildings. The Canadian efforts where much needed in this battle but they were unprepared and this battle was a failure compared to the other sucesses of the allies due to the many deaths and destruction of equipment.
  • Italian Campaign

    5/8 The Italian Campaign was connected to liberating Italy after the fall of their leader Mussolini, a key figure in the war. Italy was the first opportunity that the Canadian forces were able to be used in large numbers in order to demonstrate their fighting ability. This provided recognition for Canada and proved that they where fighters and could be more than just a dominion of Britain.

    D-Day was a huge battle for all involved in the war and D-day holds the most significance for Canada beacuse it showcased that Canada could thrive on its own under pressure. Even with less men Canada was the only Country to reach their 24 hour objective by taking possesion of Juno Beach.This battle contributed to our growing independence as it demonstrated that we can achieve greatness on our own and sparked pride in both our men and nation.
  • Liberation of The Netherlands

    Liberation of The Netherlands
    2/8 The Liberation of the Netherlands happened closer to the end of the war as Germany surrended because of Hitlers suicide and Canadas role was huge. They negotiated a truce which permitted relief supplies to enter the Netherlands. No part of western Europe was liberated at a more vital moment and the Dutch people cheered Canadian troops as one town after another was freed, in honour of their gift of freedom Dutch people have sent 10,000 tullips anually to Canada since the wars end.
