    Paris started mobilizing for war in September 1939, when Nazi Germany attacked Poland, but the war seemed far away until May 10, 1940, when the Germans attacked France and quickly defeated the French army. The French government departed Paris on June 10, and the Germans occupied the city on June 14. They maintained control of the city until it was finally liberated by the Allies on August 25, 1944.

    The Battle of the Bulge, or the Ardennes Counteroffensive, was the last major German offensive campaign on the Western Front during World War II. It was launched through the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia, and it ended with the American units retaking all ground they had lost. After this battle, the defeat of Germany was clearly only a matter of time.

    Battle of Iwo Jima

    The Battle of Iwo Jima was an epic military campaign between U.S. Marines and the Imperial Army of Japan. The island of Iwo Jima had three airfields that could serve as a staging facility for a potential invasion of mainland Japan. American forces invaded the island, and after some of the bloodiest fighting of World War II, it’s believed that all but 200 or so of the 21,000 Japanese forces on the island were killed, as were almost 7,000 Marines in the U.S. victory.

    Victory in Europe Day, generally known as VE Day or V-E Day, is a day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender of its armed forces.
  • Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

    After Germany had surrendered, the allies focused completely on Japan. The allies gave Japan an ultimatum which was for Japan's unconditional surrender, or complete, and utter destruction. Japan refused the ultimatum, which resulted in the continuation of the war. Two weeks later an American plane dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, and once again on Nagasaki 3 days later. After suffering huge civilian, and military casualties Japan finally surrendered, officially ending World War 2.
