Abraham Lincoln is elected as the 16th President of the United States -
Virginia Succeeds from the United States
Virginia's delegates vote to succeed from the union. The vote was 88 for and 55 against. -
Western Virginia Delegate Meet
The delegates of western Virginia were of the 55 that voted against the succession of Virginia from the union. They met again in Wheeling to adopt a government to restore the connection of Virginia to the Union. -
Constitutional convention
April 3rd 1862 was the date set by Gov. Francis Pierpont as the date to vone on the constitution. On April 18th they would meet again and the new constitution was approved 18,062 to 514. -
The U.S senate votes to approve the new state
The Senate passes the application to make a new state 23 to 17. The House of Representatives approved the bill in December 1862. -
Lincoln signs the bill
President Lincoln signed the proclamation that would admit WV to the Union. -

On June 20th 1863 West Virginia became the 35th state admited into the United States of America.
