Causes of war
The main causes of the world war was because of the Treaty of Versailles, Fascism, Hitler and the Nazi Party, appeasement, and the Great Depression. Also the expansion of the Japanese into Manchuria,China for minerals and resources during the great depression. Also when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and the US decided to bomb them back. -
Japanese Invasion of China
The Great depression hit Japan really hard, at that time, Japan was growing into a powerful state but lacked resources, eager to find resources, Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931, then invaded China in 1937 for their abundant supply of minerals and resources. China asked the League of Nations for help, they told Japan to get out but they ignored them and kept on invading. Later, Japan would leave the league of nations. -
Rape of Nanking
The Japanese Imperial army went to the Capital city of China and murdered 300,000 of the 600,000 civilians and soldiers living there.It lasted 6 weeks and was known as the Rape of Nanking,representing the single worst atrocity during the war out all the European and Pacific wars. -
Germany's invasion of Poland
Germany invaded Poland and defeated them weeks after the invasion. From East Prussia,North Germany,Silesia, and slovakia in the south is where the German troops attacked from. The fought all the way to Warsaw, then Warsaw surrendered to the German on September 27, 1939. -

Hitler sent his really huge army eastward to invade the Soviet Union. The invasion went from the North Cape to the Black sea. The army of Germany showed its power going against the Russians Barbarossa was the turning point of the war when German soldiers had to have a 2 front war. -
Attack on Pearl Harbor
Before 8 am, Japanese fighter planes attack American Naval Base in Pearl Harbor near Honolulu, Hawaii. The Japanese did a lot of damage in 2 hours, destroying 20 American Naval Vessels, 8 huge battleships, and 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 American soldiers and sailors die. Right after the tragic event, Franklin D. Roosevelt declares war on Japan. Days later, Japan’s allies Germany and Italy declare war on the U.S, 2 years later the U.S joins the world war. -

This event is known as payback for Germany by Britain and the U.S. British bombers drop bombs in Hamburg,Germany at night while the U.S bombed them during the day. The British drop 2,300 tons of bombs equal to the amount Germany dropped on London. The British did not lose many people thanks to the Window (a new radar jamming device). -

This invasion on the Nazis by the allies (U.S,Britain, and Canada) liberated Northern France from Nazi control. Spring 1944 was when the allies defeated the Germans. The Normandy Landings have been called the beginning of the end of the war in Europe. -

Hitler tries to split allied armies in Northwest Europe trying to surprise blitzkrieg thrust through the Ardennes to Antwerp. The being caught off guard, American units come and have battles with the Germans to stem the German advance at St.-Vith,Elsenborn Ridge, Houffalize and Bastogne. -

Operation Thunderclap
Also known as the bombing of Dresden which occurred from the night of Feb. 13 to Feb. 15. Allied forces bombed the German city of Dresden in attempt to disrupt lines of communication but did more than that but threaten the German population and was a cause of the early German surrender. -

Battle of Iwo Jima
Small islands located near the homeland of Japan were used as air and supply bases. Iwo Jima was an island only eight square miles in size. Operations to take over Iwo Jima lasted from Feb. 19 through March 26. 6,500 of the allied soldiers died in the operations with 20,000 wounded. -

On May 8th, the Germans surrendered with the Americans and British celebrating in Europe, thus the name VE for Victory in Europe. -

Dropping of the atomic bombs
Though the Germans surrendered, the Japanese were still in the fight. In attempt to make Japan surrender, an American B-29 dropped the first atom bomb the world has seen on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on August 6th, 1945. The single bomb killed 80,000 people and destroyed 90% of the city. The Japanese still did not surrender so a second atom bomb was dropped on Nagasaki on Aug. 9th which willed 40,000 more people. -
VJ Day
Japan and the world have never seen so much destruction from a single bomb. The loss and devastation was too much for Japan to handle, so Japan surrendered on Aug. 15 1945 thus a victory for the allies which is why it is called VJ day which means Victory in Japan. -
Creation of the United Nations
Representatives of the 26 nations against the axis nations came together in San Francisco and created the United Nations. The representatives all signed the Declaration of the United Nations which pledged to use all available resources against the axis powers. On April, 4th 1949, 12 countries of North America and Western Europe signed the North Atlantic Treaty, which meant if any countries declared war against the NATO, all countries would be involved. -
