Battle of Iwo Jima

Many battles were fought before this one to capture small islands to use for supplies. Iwo Jima only lasted about a month and we onlly lost around 6,500 Americans. In the end around 300 Japanese were still alive but they were taken prisoner to the USA.

Okinawa was the last major battle for a Pacific Island. Here we over powered the Japanese defenders, they had 130,000 while the US had around 180,000 troops. Not only did the Japanese military people die but so did many of their civilians.

This is the day that the Germans quit and said they could no longer giht with the United States and Great Britain. It was a day for celebration. Surrender documents were signed in Berlin and eastern Germany. Now the German's main fear was being kept as a prisoner. But all the fighting didnt stop on the 8th in Silesia it wasnt until the 9th when the Germans surrendered.

They figured if they were going to attack the Japanese home islands it would have to be by air because if they did it by ground we would lose way more troops. A bomb was dropped on Hiroshima by a American airplane. The bomb destroyed Hiroshima and when no surrender call was coming from the Japanese the U.S. dropped another bomb on Nagasaki.
