  • World War ll Started

    World War II began in Europe on September 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland.
  • Japan threatens the British and Dutch

    In July 1941 Japan sent troops threatening British and Dutch possessions in the Far East.
  • Germany led an Invasion

    On 22 June 1941, Germany led the European Axis powers in an invasion of the Soviet Union
  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    In December 1941, Japan attacked American and British territories with near-simultaneous offensives against Southeast Asia and the Central Pacific, including an attack on the US fleet at Pearl Harbor which forced the US to declare war against Japan
  • Declarations of United Nations

    The Soviet Union, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, and 22 smaller or exiled governments issued the Declaration by United Nations.
  • Japan takes over

    Japan and its ally Thailand had almost fully conquered Burma, Malaya, the Dutch East Indies, Singapore, and Rabaul. This left Japan with many prisoners and lots of losses of the Allies.
  • Allied forces invade Sicily

    Nicknamed Operation Husky this was a major campaign of World War II, in which the Allies took the island of Sicily from the Axis powers.
  • U.S and British arrive on beaches in North Africa

    US and British troops land at several points on the beaches of Algeria and Morocco in French North Africa.
  • Allies take back islands

    For the first time, Allied forces go on the offensive against Japanese forces by landing on and taking Tulagi, Florida, and Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands.
  • Italy surrenders to the Allies

    General Dwight Eisenhower publicly announces the surrender of Italy to the Allies.
  • Germans take control of Rome

    The Germans immediately seize control of Rome and northern Italy, establishing a puppet Fascist regime under Mussolini, who is freed from imprisonment by German commandos.
  • Allies take control of Rome

    Allied troops liberate Rome. Within six weeks, Anglo-American bombers could hit targets in eastern Germany for the first time.

    Finland agrees to sign an armistice with the Soviet Union and to expel German forces

    The Soviets launch their final offensive, encircling Berlin.
  • Hitler Dies

    Hitler commits suicide.
  • Germany signs a document

    Germany signs the second document of surrender in Berlin. It also comes into effect on May 8 at 11:01 PM CET. In Moscow, this was already after midnight on May 9.
  • Bomb on Nagasaki

    The United States drops an atomic bomb on Nagasaki.
  • Japan won't surrender

    The unwillingness of Allied troops to take prisoners in the Pacific theatre had made it difficult for Japanese soldiers to surrender.
  • Bomb on Hiroshima

    The United States drops an atomic bomb on Hiroshima.
  • Japan Surrenders

    Having agreed in principle to unconditional surrender on August 14, 1945, Japan formally surrenders, ending World War II.
