    Mussolini was put into power in 1922 but made himself a dictator in 1925. He carried out public workds programs and reduced the unemployment rate, making the people like him.

    Adolf Hitler Becomes Chancellor of Germany
    Hitler becoming Germany's chancellor was a major turning point for the country. He wanted to do away with politics and make Germany powerful, and most of the German population supported this plan.
  • Hitler Remilitarizes Rhineland

    Hitler Remilitarizes Rhineland
    Hitler completely ignores the Treaty of Versialles by sending German military troops into the Rhineland to take it over. He remilitarizes it, then continues to take Austria, Czechoslovakia, and later Poland.
  • Germany Annnexes Austria

    Germany Annnexes Austria
    Germany created a plan to overtake Austria, and the chancellor heard about it so he resigned due to pressure from Hitler. The next day, Hitler took his troops and captured Austria.

    The Battle of Stalingrad was considered a turning point for the war in favor of the Allies. It was one of the bloodiest battles in history, with military and civilian casualties amounting to almost 2 million.

    The Americans launched a surprise attack on Guadalcanal and took control of the air base under construction. Both sides had heavy losses, especially the Japaneese, so they were forced to leave in 1943.

    American soldiers invaded Iwo Jima because they needed a base on the coast of Japan. The defending forces fought hard, but the Americans won the battle. There's a famous picture of the American flag being raised in victory after fighting.

    The last and the biggest Pacific island battle in World War II. It involved American and Japaneese forces, losing almost 100,000 soldiers from both sides.

    On May 8th, 1945, German troops laided down their arms and stopped fighting, surrendering. Both Great Britian and the United States celebrated the Victory in Europe.

    The US became the first and only country to use atomic weaponry during a war. The bomb on the Japanese city ended World War II, but it's argured that it was also the start of the Cold War.

    The Nuremberg Trials were 13 trials where the Nazi war criminals were brought to justice. The criminals had crimes against peace and humanity. Adolf Hitler commited suicide and was not at the trials.

    Better known as the Labor Management Relations Act of 1947. It restricted the power and activies of labor unions.
  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    An agreement signed by the Soviet Union and seven of it's European satellites. It established a mutual defense organization that put Soviets in command of the armed forces.
