The bridge served as straight access to Beijing, and as the bridge was lost to japanese troops, so was Beijing and it's port city, Tianjin. Full-scale war was announced. The effect was that this inflamed the United States and ignitioned the idea of U.S. to join the war.

It also affected Japan by producing radiation effecting the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki causing cancer and other defects.
